Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Presbyterian
In November, 2003, the University of New Mexico discontinued it's pediatric cardiac
surgical program. Accordingly, ours is the only New Mexico program providing
cardiac surgical repairs and palliations in infants and children. We believe that New
Mexico’s children and their families are best served by a stable, high quality and
comprehensive pediatric cardiology program located within our state.
Our physicians have more than a passing interest in the welfare of New Mexico's
children and families. We established pediatric cardiology as a specialty in New
Mexico over 30 years ago. Our cardiologists and surgeon possess nearly 100
years of combined service to New Mexico's children. Dr. Carl Lagerstrom, a
Vanderbilt University trained pediatric cardiac surgeon, has practiced here for over
14 years and shares our deeply rooted commitment to quality, family-centered
care. From 1993 through 2002, the cumulative cardiac surgical mortality at
Presbyterian Hospital was 3.4%. This compared to a mortality of 6.5% during
1997-2001 among the 47 participating U.S. centers of the benchmark Pediatric
Cardiac Care Consortium (PCCC), which has studied and reported the results of
80,000 surgeries over a 20 year period. Consensus-based risk adjustment shows
that our surgical complexity (2.28) was not different from the PCCC (2.30).
Presbyterian’s pediatric heart surgery volume through 2006 has averaged 115
cases per year, compared to a national average of 106 among pediatric cardiac
surgical centers. From 2001 through 2004, cumulative mortality was 2.3%. In
2006, Dr. Lagerstrom performed 119 surgical procedures with an overall mortality
of 0.8% (1 death) (2005 mortality was 0.7%). This included 70 procedures (59%)
utilizing cardiopulmonary bypass and 55 operations (46%) in children 1 year or
younger. According to New Mexico's Bureau of Vital Records & Health Statistics,
New Mexico's infant mortality rate attributable to congenital heart disease in 2002
- 03 (the last years for which complete data are available) averaged 18 per
100,000 compared to a national average of 37.5 per 100,000. During these years,
Dr. Lagerstrom performed all pediatric cardiac surgeries in New Mexico.
We recognize that certain rare and unusual cases may require referral elsewhere.
In our practice, this has typically numbered 1–3 cases per year. It is apparent that
most infants and children can safely receive cardiac surgery in New Mexico with
excellent results.
We are New Mexico's comprehensive pediatric cardiology program and possess
superior expertise and experience. Our program offers a state-of-the-art
therapeutic catheterization program including ASD, patent foramen ovale & large
PDA closure, and vascular stenting. To assure maximum safety and optimal
outcomes, national standards require that centers performing catheter
interventions in infants and children have on-site pediatric cardiac surgical backup.
Ours is the only New Mexico program that meets those standards.
